Mac OS X El Capitan: Should You Upgrade?

New operating systems for PC and Mac are being released at a breakneck pace. To upgrade, or not to upgrade -- it's an important question. Should you make the leap to El Capitan, the new Mac OS?

Users who also own an iPhone and iPad will see the most benefit from El Capitan. You can now jot a note or scribble with your finger in iOS’s notes, and that will transfer to your Mac’s notes app. Plus, some Mac apps such as Mail now use special gestures on the trackpad so you can swipe messages into the trash just like on your iPhone.
 
An improvement everyone will appreciate is the ability to mute web browser tabs (great for banishing autoplaying advertising videos). However, as with any major OS upgrade, it’s always wise to exercise caution:

• Before installing, backup your machine to an external hard drive using Time Machine or a cloud backup service like CrashPlan.
• Check the websites of any essential programs you use to make sure that they have been certified for compatibility with El Capitan. Some programs won’t work properly until they receive an update. There are reports of Microsoft Office not working well for some people after the upgrade. 
• If you’re not the adventurous type, wait until the “.1” update that Apple inevitably releases to fix many of the system’s launch day problems.
